Ancient Earth
Edie Hartshorne and Janet "Purnima" Bray have created
a genre of music which emanates from awareness of breath and silence, which
invites one pointed attention, and wihch evokes an inner resonance. Using
Tibetan bells, bamboo and silver flutes, Japanese koto, and ocarina, their
compositoins bridge musical and meditative traditions of East and West. This
live recording, made in an adobe chapel in New Mexico, expresses commitment
to the Earth, and offers a refuge for calm reflection during times of turmoil
and uncertainty.
Janet and Edie comment on how their music mirrors purpose in their own lives: "We seek to create an alternative voice to violence. Oour music is an ongoing inquiry: How can we create inner peace while engaging in meaningful action? How does music help us return to our spiritual practice and moral commitment? What does music teach us about right-relationship to each other, to the planet?"
Longing for darkness, spring rain
Scent of jasmine pulls us
Deep into the ancient earth.
Guadalupe weeps tears of blood.
Remember the face we had before birth,
Moon above the mountain rim
Wind over the stones.
Seeking an integrated simplicity,
Dew on bamboo leaf
Roses of fire at midnight.
We caste our songs,
Prayers on the water,
A life raft for the soul.
