Edie with flute Edie’s recently published book, Light in Blue Shadows, is now available on Amazon. In this spare, translucent memoir, Edie Hartshorne presents a collection of finely rendered vignettes that explore the passage through crisis, loss, and suffering. Her transformational journey unfolds like a living work of art,  inspiring us to remain open to kindness and compassion even in the midst of suffering.

Edie Hartshorne, MSW, is a therapist, musician and writer. Raised a Quaker and now a practicing Buddhist, she integrates spiritual inquiry and music with her therapeutic private practice. She is also a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. For the last two decades she has dedicated her work as a musician to creating peace. Specializing in meditative music, she composes and records on Japanese Koto, Native American, bamboo and clay flutes. She performs extensively in the US, Europe, Latin America and Japan, especially for peace actions in places that have endured violence and suffering, such as Sarajevo and Hiroshima. She also has performed at Buddhist events and at retreats with Thich Nhat Hahn, and at the Dalai Lama Sacred Music Festival. In recognition of her work using music for peace she was elected a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science. She has created several audio recordings and is available for performances, retreats or conferences.

A former Fulbright Scholar in Uruguay and advocate for indigenous people in Latin America, she currently collaborates with the World Wheel (see newsletter) to preserve indigenous Shuar culture and the rainforest in Ecuador. She is also Co-Director of A World Without Armies: Costa Rica Initiative. A recipient of the Distinguished Women of Berkeley Award, she lives with her husband in Berkeley, CA and is the mother of two grown children.

Edie Hartshorne combines spiritual inquiry with music, poetry, somatic practice, and a keen aesthetic sense. She has traveled the world and brings to Berkeley the serenity of her Japanese tea house. Combining peaceful space with 35 years of counseling, meditation, somatic practices and music, Edie’s guidance can facilitate new insights and a sense of well being.
